Podiatry

Overview

Childs Foot

A Podiatrist is a qualified practitioner whose role is to investigate and address pathology related to the structure and function of the feet and lower limbs in people of any age.

The aim of Podiatry is to assess and address the factors causing foot problems; and then to advise clients about ways they can manage the problem themselves where this is safe and appropriate.

All clients discharged from Podiatry are welcome to return for assessment if a new problem develops, or if their medical history changes.

Eligibility

Priority is given to those who have existing peripheral vascular disease (poor circulation), peripheral neuropathy (damaged sensation of the feet), infection or chronic foot pain (for orthotic/insole therapy).

People requesting a pedicure service will be advised of appropriate self management techniques. Central Bayside Community Health Services is not funded to provide this type of ongoing care.

Clients with corns and calluses will be advised to make footwear changes as this is often the cause of problems.

Clients who have difficulty maintaining their toenails will be provided with long-handled nail files and they, or their carers will be educated on self-care.

Referrals

Clients are required to have a doctor’s referral containing current medical history, list of medications and reason for Podiatry. The Podiatry service is committed to Health Promotion and therefore runs “Self-Care Understanding for Feet” & “Diabetes & Feet” groups. These groups are aimed at improving independence and empowerment of the individual in regard to their foot health and care.

Catchment
