Document addressing Selection Criteria (if required)
Some positions in CBCHS require applicants to lodge a statement/document that addresses specific selection criteria. Applicants are short-listed based on their ability to convince the Interview Panel that they have the capabilities required to perform the role-capabilities which are articulated in the selection criteria.
i. What are Selection Criteria and how are they used?
Selection criteria describe the personal qualities, skills, abilities, knowledge and qualifications (if any) a person needs to perform the role effectively. They are used to identify the right person for the role.
CBCHS selection criteria are divided into:
- Mandatory criteria (‘must have’ criteria)
- Desirable criteria (‘nice to have’ criteria)
ii. How do Applicants address Selection Criteria?
The statement addressing selection criteria should be a separate document from your covering letter. Our preferred format is:
- List criteria as headings in bold print
- address each criterion in a couple of paragraphs or a list of bulleted points (provide more information if requested).
- Understand the criteria. For criteria with more than one part e.g. ‘Effective Written and Verbal Communication Skills’, ensure you address each part. Deal with the criteria in the same order as in the advertisement or duty statement.
- Use clear language with specific and relevant examples or supporting evidence from your current or past work (paid or unpaid), health, extra-curricular activities or other experience. If you have experience in tasks mentioned in the advertisement and/or other documentation, they’re good examples to use.
- Quantify your experience or skills if you can, e.g. ‘three years experience in creating monthly budgets using Microsoft Excel.’
- Use action-oriented words e.g. ‘assessed’, ‘implemented’, ‘organised’, ‘developed’, and include the results of these actions.
A good way of addressing selection criteria is to use the STAR formula:
S• ituation - where, when and context of your example
T• ask - the task or problem to be solved
A• ction - how you solved the problem, fulfilled the task or handled the situation
R• esult - the outcome achieved as result of your action/s
iii. Structure of Document to address Selection Criteria
Layout
Where appropriate, dot points should be used, rather than using long paragraphs of text. This ensures that the statement is as easy as possible for the interview panel to read (and also demonstrates written communication skills in the document itself).
Length
Conciseness is important in a document of this type. About 250 words is generally an appropriate length for each criterion. However, this may depend upon factors such as the role being applied for.
Presentation
You should ensure that:
- there are no errors anywhere in the document;
- the document is formatted neatly; and
- the sentences are grammatically correct and concise.
Ensure all required documents are attached to your email. Email your application to:
